Bayreuth meets Afrika.

Together as BIGSAS colleagues we designed a city tour that was announced as the following by local media:

“„Bayreuth meets Africa – Eine ungewöhnliche Stadtführung“: Unter diesem Motto führen Doktoranden der Graduiertenschule durch die Bayreuther Innenstadt. Die Stadtführungen finden am Samstag, 16. Juli, und am Sonntag, 17.Juli, statt und beginnen an beiden Tagen jeweils um 11.00 Uhr und um 14.00 Uhr. Alle vier Stadtführungen werden sowohl in deutscher als auch in englischer Sprache angeboten. Die Teilnehmer werden dabei verblüffende Berührungspunkte zwischen Afrika und Bayreuth entdecken. Treffpunkt für alle Interessierten ist am Samstag der BIGSAS-Stand und am Sonntag die Mohrenapotheke in der Maximilianstraße, jeweils 10 Minuten vor Beginn der Führung. Die Stadtführungen sind für alle Teilnehmer kostenlos.”

The tour aimed at bringing together two perspectives:

• make visible connections of the built environment, the streets and other elements of urban space to afrika as both a continent and an imagination
• introduce an ‘afrikan perspective’ to bayreuth – by referring to everyday experiences of afrikan scholars in town

As with other experiences of similar, experience-orientated routes, this endeavour was a great success, using surprise, humour, subtle shock (Walter Benjamin) & artful defamiliarization as tools for binding & re-imagination.
